Who Am I and What Do I Do?

Hello, my name is Murtaza Mustafa. I’m a 20-year-old Computer Science undergraduate at Heriot Watt University, majoring in software engineering. My academic journey is not just about the degree; it’s about exploring the vast realms of technology that intrigue me. I have a particular fascination with machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), which I believe are the future of technological innovation. Currently, I am an intern at Veehive, a dynamic company that encourages innovation and creativity. My role involves researching various open-source neural networks and adapting them for specific use cases within the company. This experience has been instrumental in honing my practical skills and understanding the real-world applications of AI.

Student Life in Dubai

In September 2023, I embarked on a new chapter of my life by moving to Dubai as an international student. The city, known for its architectural marvels and vibrant culture, has been a fascinating place to live and study. I’ve just completed my first academic year here, and it’s been an incredible journey filled with learning and personal growth. Dubai’s infrastructure is not just excellent but also incredibly convenient, making daily life smooth and efficient. The city’s emphasis on safety is another aspect that I appreciate, as it creates a secure environment for residents and visitors alike. However, the cost of living, particularly rent and food, can be quite high. Despite these challenges, I’ve found ways to manage my expenses effectively, ensuring that my focus remains on my studies and career development.

Part-Time Jobs and Internships

Navigating the world of part-time jobs and internships as an international student in Dubai has been a learning experience. The city’s regulations are strict, prohibiting students from working on a student visa. This limitation often leads to a challenging search for internships, with the added risk of encountering scams. Many fraudulent companies exploit the desperation of students, either by making them work without pay or by asking for money in exchange for job promises. Fortunately, I’ve been able to avoid such pitfalls through networking. Attending numerous events and meetups related to my field has allowed me to promote my skills and expand my professional network. This proactive approach has led to several internship opportunities. A crucial piece of advice I’d offer is to be active on LinkedIn and other social media platforms, stay informed about events related to your field, and continuously improve your skills. Participating in hackathons, such as those organized by DDS, is also an excellent way to gain practical experience and potentially secure internships, as companies often scout for talent at these events.

Gap in Academics and Job Market

One of the most significant challenges I’ve encountered is the gap between the theoretical knowledge imparted by universities and the practical skills demanded by the job market. Academic curricula often cover a wide range of topics superficially, expecting students to conduct further research independently. This expectation underscores the importance of self-directed learning in the tech field, where staying updated and relevant requires continuous education. Relying solely on classroom content can leave students unprepared for the realities of the job market. To bridge this gap, it’s essential for students to actively seek out opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge. Participating in hackathons, even those that seem daunting, provides invaluable experience. Platforms like DDS offer a wealth of resources for self-learning. I encourage students not to be bound by their university’s curriculum pace but to take the initiative to explore, research, and create projects that showcase their abilities and interests. This proactive approach not only enriches your learning experience but also makes you more competitive in the job market.
